I have a friend who is staying illegal in the country for over 8 yrs. She has not renewed her passport ever since she came to the US. How does the nepali embassy deal with this if she wants to renew her passport now?

Any useful suggestions would be appreciated.

Nepali beaurocracy being dumb, stupid and designed to screw up its own citizens, I will be surprized if they issue the visa. The reason that I am saying this is because of an experience faced by one of my friends. He went back to Nepal after x number of illegal residence in the US. Immigration officials at TIA, refused to stamp "Arrived in Nepal" into his passport because he overstayed his visa in the US and let him out without such stamp. I fail to understand why..

It should not matter to Nepales embassy of your status. You do not have to explain your status to them. I do not see any reason for them not to renew your passport.

Thanks to all for your responses. Does anybody know if they renew the passport without asking questions on the visa status?

Thanks again

They renew it as long as you can present them your old pasport. Becareful, they might ask you to show original or copy of citizenship certificate.

Natasha,
Ask her to try at Consulate office in New York, instead of DC. I don't see any reason why they won't issue her passport. They're not US immigration employee, so they shouldn't be concerned about her legal status in the US. Good luck to her!

Like Newlynew mentioned, I had one funny experience at TIA. Ten years ago, US embassy only issued 1 yr multiple entry visa for students, and rest would depend on supporting immigration documents like I-20. When I went back to Nepal in 1997, the immigration officer at TIA flipped over some pages and said, "tapaiko visa ta sakiyeko racha ni. Americama Illegal po basnu bahyecha." I was quite shocked by his remarks. At the same time, I chuckled at him. I didn't think it was necessary to explain him all about US visa... hehe!! I just sarcastically replied, " Ho nita dai! aba illegal kati basnu bhanera afanai desh farkeko." He didn't say a word afterward. He stammed my passport and let me go. I thought how absurd our immigration officers are.
