We were taught in school that this charismatic king of gorkha unified a nation that was divided in to fragments of small kingdoms.I do not recall anywhere in the earlier part of Nepal's history about the kingdom being a single nation before its unification. How could this be possible? The present monarch which is a product of the gorkha palace endorses and enforces that belief. The wit and military strength of gorkha king Prithivi infact used the offensive military tactics to declare wars and attack smaller kingdoms to stretch his empire.Gurkha king was an imperialist not a unifier.
May all be aware.

I don't know what some of you folks are blabbering about, and I fail to understand your rational for crucifying Mr. P.N Shah. First of all, if you are accusing him for current problems in Nepal, that my friends is an oxymoron in itself. If it wasn't for him, you wouldn't be talking about Nepal as we identify ourself with today. And secondly, judging someone two hundred years ago with present values is somewhat of a misnomer. So what the fu*k are some of you talking about? Learn to accept the bottom line as it stands and stop whining...

good discussion with interesting views on p.n.s
in my opinion, he united nepal because today, we can stand proudly and say we are nepalese from nepal.doesnot that help you to define your indentity and where you come from.today, you will be posting in someother forum if it was other way around.we got to thank him for unifying nepal.
the bottom line is help nepal, not only with your words but action. do something for the country in anymeans.
i am writing this msg from gorkha.the place where prithivi was born.cheers and keep it up the flow.............

"today, you will be posting in someother forum if it was other way around." For all his greatness, PNS has got nothing to do with why you are posting on this forum. The credit for that must go to Bahubhakta Baje who created a Nepalese community. Nepalese state is a complete failure. Nepalese community is a grand success.

Good one, Bihan-ji.

You are 100% right.

Magars were swindled out of their religion, culture, sovereignty and identity. Tamangs too have been cruelly tricked and had their lands taken away. Newars, with all their glory, were mercilessly subdued and shamelessly tortured. The Kirats too were promised equal alliance with the distribution of "lal mohars" but then PNS and his decendents broke those promises.

Come to think of, we hear so much about Nepal's golden years when Kirati, Licchavi, Malla kings ruled the valley. Compared to that, past 250 years really sucked, did it not? So what is this "great" shah lineage that royalists talk about? I don't know.

HAVING only the NEPALI flag is nothing. We say we?re proud of being NEPAL. But don?t you know what does proud mean? Should n?t we be proud of our achievements rather than the failure? Are we trying to be the proud like the pride of beggar which some of you folks are talking about. Let?s see, if you say you?re PROUD Nepali (poor chap without enough to eat, live or wear) to other citizens of rich nations. Can you guess what?s their thoughts are? It should not be very different than when we hear the pride of ?Khates? or beggar. I?d say that guy is stupid n? perhaps that?s why he deserves to be poor coz? he?s proud. That means he doesn?t see any bad being poor; anything bad with our failures, our current problems coz? we?re proud of it.

Prithvi Narayan Shah was not perfect. He did some good things and some bad things. But he left his mark and here we are today long after his death talking about him ... and I am sure people will be talking about him 500 years from today in the Nepal of that day.

gwayjo Please learn to write proper english

I have one thing to say to you .... Communist

another thing is.... how come you are calling PN Shah such names...

What do you have to say about Mr.Bush and his invasion in Afganistan and Iraq...

Brother those days were times when you lived by the sword and died by the sword... he was brave man... forget magars and tamangs.. can you give me the population count of each caste in nepal??? if you can than the majority wins....

boys we all can talk like kids but it takes time to think like a man....

kya waihyat kura garney...........

so you are saying Baburam N' Prachanda are the best thing that ever happend to nepal??

or are you saying we should all follow GP Koirala and his indian congress party....

if you are a commi you are following the wrong leader.. how about getting a tamang or magar for a leader instead of a brahmin who is fighting for the rights of the common people.........

this is what I have to say........... eeeeeeeeeeeee kha ....

hatti aayo hatti fussa......... even if prachanda wins this battle he will be the next king..
not trying to point fingers but magars and tamangs will be crying again....

if you really care for your peopel try to educate them not burn schools.. even if it is nationlistic education.... it is still education people are learning to read and write.. that is the bottom line.. not your worthless blabber about Father of Nepal.... you couldn't even be his horse care taker forget about competing with him..... you are full of shit...

what have you ever done for nepal for blaming PN Shah for making nepal from scratch

yes he cheatd the magars or whatever.... this world is survived by the fittest,
Haven't you heard of Survival of the Fittest...

How about the whites killing all the Native's in USA, Australia, South America.. so that they could rule.... this is the law of the world....

All you people can see bad about the Kings of nepal but when you look around the world the whole world is like that... and we are no different......

If you really want to feel what poverty is go to any Indian Reservation in USA and you will see what suffering is... atleast Magars and Gurungs can rise from their villages and are free to choose and do whatever they want... they have freedom to do what they please, there were many ministers and admin's in Nepal.... even right now there are some.....

brother what makes you think all chettris and bahuns are rich and previlaged???? there are so many who are poor and hungry like the magars and bahuns you are talking about.

You know what there are tooooooooooooooo freaking many poor and hungry people in the world than rich people, but who cares????

This is a Rat Race.... if you can run you will win otherwise you can whine all your life and nothing will happen...

No Offense dude!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you started the wrong thread............... You are bound to get hammered. You are dissin' all nepalese in general........... there are so many people in nepal not magars and gurungs only...... Our nepal is not even as big as Arkansas and you want to divide nepal into pieces...... talking shit from 500 yrs ago....

You talk a black man in america trying to get paid because his ancestors were slaves...
You wanna get paid???? go get a Job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Mr.DJ

First of all, let me clear few points. I'm not COMMUNIST neither in my life have I read any commnist theories. I've no idea what u r talking about. N' the second I didn't mention anything about bahuns, chhetris. What nationalistic education does is 'TO CREATE FANATIC n' blind PEOPLE like u' so that the people in the government (no matter whether it's king, parties or maoists be) can take advantage of you. I guess you didn't even have a clue what I'm talking about because you've already been made blind either by nationalistic education or u r parasites themselves. I don't oppose Mr. P.N. Shah. Probably he did good by unifying our country. I'm talking about shah dynasty. There's not even single good achievement in all those years. But I do agree with one point; it might have been worse if he'd not unified our country. I just wanna tell that I'm not fanatic like u. I love my country but in a different way. By giving all the bad examples of the world, you are trying to justify your 'Wrong-doeing' with wrong examples. Can you see this simple truth? I can't justify my crimes in a court by showing the evidence of other crimes. Judge simply can't let me free because of thousands of other people have also commited crimes like me. This is the fact. Dude, you need to come out of your little conditioned caste (whether u're rana, bahuns or chhetris). For your kind information, i'm not minority in Nepal. Maoists or koiralas or Nepals may do harm to countries by their petty mind. But you can't justify the autocracy by showing these facts. But I'm the person that they'll be wiped out by time as there's a process called election. But now there's nth called election. We can't elect people. Did you hear Dr.Giri saying he doesn't want 2 see the invigilators for election? SO there's no way that fair election is ever going to take place in Nepal. Mr. P.N. Shah started a good campaign of unifying a country but he couldn't succeed to make better Nepal. He succeeded in unifying partially. If you know history, there're other people like Bahadur Shah who helped achieving his dream after his death. But then we went into dormancy.

You are wrong again. I dont' want to divide Nepal. There's no way of doing that. I already said that Unified Nepal is better than before P.N.'s period.

"You talk like a black man in america trying to get paid because his ancestors were slaves...You wanna get paid???? go get a Job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! like everyone else "

What are you trying to say by above point? Don't try 2 dig about the ancestors. Everyone has good history in Nepal and don't also be biased to the indians or bahuns who've migrated to Nepal. I'm not even asking for quota system for minorities. But I'm just trying to tell that there's something terribly wrong in our system, perhaps in our mind. That's why we are so POOR. No matter, whether I goto Harvard or Princeton, I still goto wash my king's feet, promote 'animal sacrifice' and 'kamaiya pratha' and 'gonna marry with the girl from my caste'. I'm gonna be damn proud of my POOREST country no matter how much do I've to suffer. If I'm proud, I'm not unhappy about my condition. THat means, I don't need to change my conditions, no need to improve. I'm happy being poor. I'm like Khate being proud in my own small group and don't really wanna get out of it.

I read your posting. Your argument does not hold water. If you have the guts, do take, rationally, and without being too emotional and prejudicially attached to your caste, the challenges thrown by Bihan. Your lecturing to Gwajyo is unnecessary. You said you believe in "survival of the fittest" and "live by swords and die by swords", I have nothing to more to say. Please do check yourself the "population" you referred in your posts and many things will come to light. Your saying Forget Magars and Tamangs is very dismissive of other groups and only shows the continuance of the perpetuated arrogance that has dominated the PN Shah?s Nepal.

I think it is one thing to take pride in our history, culture, etc., but we should also exercise our "biwek" in analyzing the history and distinguish rights from wrongs. I humbly submit that being proud or taking pride (garva) is not the same as boasting or bragging unnecessarily without knowing the real thing. That is simply "ghamanda" and "ahankara".

Anyway, I do not see any signification contribution the Shah Dynasty has made to the Nepalis as a whole in their long run of rule other than the construction of the Narayanhity Palace. If you know of any, let us hear it.

It's ok.... give us one person who can take charge of the country without being bias to replace our present king than will see....

it's easy to point fingers and blame others... how about answers and solutions... freaking teenagers..... boys grow up... look all over the world.. communism is over...

Communism is over---->Welcome to the post-modern capitalism where overnight with the disintegration of USSR the planet earth is blessed with the heavenly offerings of corporate culture.Promoters of capitalism make me laugh----<>))

Prithivi dude was indeed an imperialist and a ruthless one too.No doubt. Is it going to do anything constructive by giving birth to such a debate.Well may be
A.Because it clarifies our vague knowledge of country's past that is full of bloodsheddings, killings, kot parba,yo parba and tyo parba.

B.Like Bihan has mentioned the hollow worship of badamahrajdhiraj-->bunch of blood hungry killers-->incl. the one that sits on the throne today the legacy of few durbariya bhataure historians must be questioned esp. after the parba of Jestha 19.

I don't think this is a biased debate or some ultra-left association is involved.Truth seekers are not bunch of trouble makers or freaking teenagers like u have mentioned chor.
It is very encouraging to see this topic being discussed her.I would love to see more topics emerge like this being debated as we seek ultimate truth about our past that will pave a smoother allies to our future.

guys, this is an inseresting thread. I am enjoying the postings very much. This is one of those few threads where people have actually tried hard to use their brain instead of just some emotional outbursts and hatred against one's ethnicity for their personal experiences (may be).

To me, I appreciate what P.N.S did for Nepal. No matter it was not completed in his time, Bahadur Shah gave it the actual shape, but he started it all. Of course he had to sack Mongols, half Mongols (Newars) and other Aryans and tribal people in the south, but he didn't mean any ethnic cleansing, they were just on the way and they were separate kingdoms. And he had to win them to make a greater country.

If he had so much hatred against other ethnic groups, why would he name our country Nepal, which was the name for kingdom of Newars only? Why would he encourage so many Magars, Gurungs, Rais and Limbus to join the national army? Wouldn't he be worried about the revolt?

So, my point is in unifying this country of Nepal, which we are so proud of no matter what cast and religion we belong to, no ethnic and racial hatred was involved and no one should take it personally. If someone wants to make it even, it will be on due process.

Chakraji,
What I meant by that is this:
Our historical past has been a "Banibanawat"series of events that simply directs us to worship the clan of killers.I blame durbariya historians for this matter. And how unfortunate that we link them with a divine incarnation.
The future of republican Nepal is what I meant by the future in that line I am not promoting it simply it has become a pop-culture topics for youths these days like the "Power to the people"during janaandolan which resulted in corruption based anarchism of last fourteen years.
Truth behind the establishment of state of Nepal planted by PN Shah is not worth of a praise. And that is the whole point here.
