MARSHALL — Grief and numbness were etched on the faces of Nepalese students at Southwest Minnesota State University on Tuesday as they gathered at the Office of Cultural Diversity. They were mourning the loss of three young people from Nepal — including two current SMSU students — who died after a two-car crash in southern Minnesota on Monday on state Highway 4, south of St. James. Those killed were Utshav Basnev, 19, Nishma Timilsina, 20, and Bedija Kharel, 20. The State Patrol in Mankato reported the three were passengers in a car that was attempting a U-turn from the right shoulder of the road and was broadsided by another car. They were in a car driven by Rachel Thompson, 17, of Clarks Grove. She and Jeremy Dorpinhais, 27, of Forest City, Iowa, were taken to a Mankato hospital. The 82-year-old man who was driving the other car is in good condition at a Madelia hospital. Southwest Minnesota State spokesman Jim Tate said that Basnet and Kharel were current students, while Timilsina was enrolled last spring but was not a current student. Tate said the university was offering grief counseling for students who are still at school during the holiday break. Basnev, Timilsina and Kharel were visiting a “host uncle†from Albert Lea and Thompson was the uncle’s granddaughter, said Guinness Shrestha, an SMSU student from Khatmandu. “ She was giving them a ride home (back to Marshall),†Shrestha said. International students often travel in groups during school breaks because they lack transportation, he said. Shrestha said two other students returned to Marshall the day before, but Basnev, Timilsina and Kharel stayed another day. “ They probably went there to celebrate the New Year,†said Shrestha. Shrestha said he knew Basnet in particular. He was “studious and determined,†he said. “He didn’t go to gatherings — he would rather study. He got good grades and was hard working in his studies. He was very good in English. His papers were handed out (to other students) as examples.†Shrestha added that when Basnet did relax, he “would play guitar with us.†Basnev majored in biology with the goal of being a doctor, said Anil Singh, a sophomore majoring in health education. Singh said the three students were “friendly and got along with everybody.†Singh said he couldn’t believe that the three were gone. There are 96 students from Nepal at SMSU, said International Student Services coordinator Sandy Nelson. There are 224 international students from 27 countries here, with the highest representation from Nepal. Shrestha said the three had attended an institute in Nepal which “sent them to Southwest.†The three students worked for Aramark Dining Services, said assistant manager Lee Ann Dombek. “ They were good employees; they did everything very good,†Dombek said. Dombek remembered talking to Kharel recently. Kharel was a junior who took businesses classes, said Singh. Dombek said it is winter break at the school, so “nobody’s really around.†The ones who are still there are “very sad†and “they can’t believe it,†she said. “ All of us here at the university are deeply saddened by the tragic news of the deaths of three of our students,†SMSU President David Danahar said in a release. “The loss of these three bright and inquisitive young men and women is extremely difficult to comprehend, much less accept.†Source: - http://www.southwestmsu.edu/intranet/news/3students.cfm

NOTEBOOK, I am not the one who is telling U what u suppose to do. U are the one who is telling all of us tha "why we are making it big deal". U don't have f.k.g rights what we should do or not...If ppl wants to share thier condolence..why its giving u hard time. If u are concerning about ppl dying in Nepal U better do something or do nothng ...just don't bark ....n I am just trying to give u the reason why u don't have any feelings of r3 nepalese who passed away n U even don't have concern about other ppl who are dying; If U do care about hem..Then do womething...That's all/ Sorry guys, I don't want it to make an issue but these kind of ppl shouldn't be here. who don't know the real meaning of free speech....

notebook---just b/c there r many ppl who die everyday doesnt mean that u stop mourning or greiving the death of ur loved ones. thats like saying if one of ur frens, relatives or family members died and u r like so wht there r loadz of ppl who die everyday n there is no need to be sad. many ppl here knew the ppl who died they were friends with them and they r just expresing their grief with others. i dont really see how u can relate ppl in nepal dying to this. can u please explain?and how can u say u have NEVER seen any condolence or sympathy for ppl dying in nepal frm us. "I really dont see it as a seperate incident rather than a ultimate truth" wht exactly does this mean so if u die u dont want ppl to mourn ur death cuz there r loadz of ppl who die everyday?

Yeah everybody does have the right to express themselves but you ought to know when to shut up too .. that's my take on what's being discussed here. I just found out that it indeed is the Utsav I met.. I only met Utsav once, I knew him through a fren of mine but I was taken aback when I knew that it was him for sure, he was definitely one of the nicest ppl... the sadness is not just the death, its the death that was not meant to be and that too in a foreign land away frm home and family.. think about that.

know it is not the right time but it might be helpful. who is the driver n what about the insurance policy. I think it is very important to have an accidental attorney to represent 3 nepalese ppls. we cannot bring them back but atleast try to help the families with some compensation. Can anyone update with this issue?

My condolences too,..sadly the incidence reminds me of Fanindra Thapa a faculty of IAAS, and student in Phillipines, who died in a hit and run case. It is a close circuit of we Nepalese abroad ( among net users) that highlights cases of misfortunes and fortunes far more than things happening back home ( to notebook logic--"bro, i felt that way. nobody cares about putting any comments on ppl getting killed everyday in nepal. I see too many noises here when something happens to a nepali in a foreign country". He is right in his own logic, but concerns and our cultural norm to certain ocassions demand we discuss the topic elsewhere. Yes, compensation claims and awareness among the flocking young people from Nepal should be taken up. By, the way what is the news of late Regmi's case, was there any compensation provided to the griefing family members. 3r is right "we cannot bring them back but atleast try to help the families with some compensation" even in this case. Now again as a solace " It is just a matter of roll calls", and someone was taking online survey and one of the question in it was? *. What will you do if you know you have a day to live and have abundant resource in hand?

Hey dude common this isn't a biased stuff. Yes I do agree that many neps get killed in Nepal. The topic of conversation among their family, friends and whoever they are associated with does include them. But well the sad part is most of us communicating here aren't in Nepal. So this is our common "platform", where we do talk about what happened, express our griefs. My opinion isn't biased because Bedija was a classmate and a good friend of mine. But its something that just comes out cause everyone here is a Nepalese and is touched by what happened.

Bedija was like a sister to me. I am still in a state of shock...I had met her five months ago and I cannot believe she is not with us today. May she and others rest in peace.
