Nepal ranks second in corruption list in South Asia, 154th least corrupt in the world

December 1, 2011

Nepal has been ranked the second most corrupt country in South Asia according to an annual report by Transparency International (TI). The Corruption Perception Index (CPI) 2011, published today has Nepal ranked at 154th on the list of the least corrupt countries in the world, going down 8 places from last year.
In the South Asian region, Bhutan is the least corrupt country at 38th position whereas Afghanistan is the most corrupt country at 182nd position. The other SAARC nations also ranked on the bottom half of the list with Sri Lanka at 86th, India at 96th, Bangladesh at 120th and Pakistan and the Maldives jointly ranked at 134th position.

According to the CPI, Somalia and North Korea share the honor of being the most corrupt whereas  New Zealand,  Denmark and Finland are the least corrupt among the list of 183 countries.

Well, given that those in the ruling class are all fat cats (Kim Jong Il's successor son being literally so) and rest of the population in perpetual starvation, yeah, I guess it is fairly easy to say North Korea is one of the most corrupt nations in the world.

I am not surprised Nepal ranks high in corruption list.  Anyone can see that with their own eyes if s/he stays in Kathmandu for few weeks.  What bothers me more is the feeling of helplessness that most Nepalis have to endure when confronted by corrupt officials.  What bothers me even more is the apathy that most of Nepalis have regarding this.

We need more people like Anna Hazare, who is spearheading anti-corruption movement in India, or even like that Sherpa lady who exposed the jaw-dropping level of corruption in Tribhuvan International Airport.

We don't need to wait for a leader to lead us out of this quagmire.  We just need people, us, to speak out when corruption, in any shape or form, rears its ugly head.  Speak out when someone asks for bribe.  Don't give in!!

Don't ever say, "Ke garney, yestai ho Nepal ko chalan."
