The ancient Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Chinese, Indian, and Mesoamerican and many more civilizations are quite fascinating and intriguing to know and read about. Sorry friends, I was a bit busy today, so could not reach sajha on time. Ok, as said by izen, we will make Mesopotamia the genesis. ?Mesopotamia? is a Greek word which means ?land between the rivers?. The Mesopotamian civilization flourished between the fertile alluvial soil of Euphrates and Tigris rivers which was spread from modern day Iraq to some parts of Syria. Earliest communities first settled to the north, but as rainfall was so unpredictable, by 5000 BC, most of the population had moved to the south.

In the third millennium, the alluvial plains south of modern day Baghdad were called Sumer and Akkad. Sumer is the southern part whereas Akkad is the northern part where the Tigris and Euphrates rivers come nearer. In the second millennium, the two regions came to be jointly called Babylonia.

The Mesopotamians built massive temples or ziggurats, in which the priestly class resided, the human representatives of God. Those priests controlled the religious life of the community, economy, land ownership as well as the long distance trade of the country. Mesopotamia eventually disintegrated into many powerful city-states, which were self- sufficient. Though those city states depended largely on each other economically, they remained strongly isolationalist. This tendency of isolationalism led to the formation of twelve different Mesopotamian states.

Ok, this is a quick overview of Mesopotamia, but still lot more remains to be explored. The research and composition takes a bit of time. So, I will continue when I get ample of time. If you have more information and would like to continue, please do.

Izen, as I read somewhere, just after a year of Mohammed?s death, his successors securely held Arabia to invade Byzantine Empire and Persia. They defeated Byzantines in 635 AD in Damascus, which led to subsequent invasion of Mesopotamia, which had remained largely Arab ethnically. Persia was also defeated in the hands of the Muslims and the people were converted to Islam. Conversion was rapid in urban regions while slower in rural areas, where the peasantry did not converted completely until the ninth century.

What is your opinion on dark days of civilizations?Didn't mean to derail your civilization on the chronological order?My limited understanding on civilizations have tilted my views more towards the health of civilizations per se.
Why do civilizations go through cycles like an individual's life time?Islamic civilization is credited for preserving classical papers of Socrates,Plato and Aristotle.The genesis of western civilizations which I believe still dominates most of the western mind.Whatever happened to their high days?Renaissance in Europe was the wake up call for the westerners.Do all the deteriorated civilizations like our in the present need renaissance?Personally,I think inorder for the society to leave behing the darkest hours,renaissance can be the most imporatant tool.Your thoughts.

It is not Islamic civilization preserved the works of Plato, Socrates and Aristotle.

It is the Romans. Coz Romans defeated the Greeks in around 500 BC but didn't destroy what they had. In fact, they even copied and acknowledged the Greeks and their culture. And Muslims in Europe were far later than the fall of the Romans. Roman empire in the West was destroyed by the Barbarians from the north, mostly Germans (around 100 AD) and in the East until the defeat of Constantinople by the ottoman Turks (around 1400 AD).
Renaissance was a period in the western history before or in the beginning of the so called modern history and after the Medieval ages or the so called dark ages. It is between or around 1400 AD to 1600 AD.

Civilzations seem to flourish and slow down as time passes by. They thrived during a certain time period and faded away while others took the stronghold later on. One more intriguing and interesting aspect of civilization is it originated in one part of the world but its customs and innovations got transferred and deeprooted in other parts of the world.

The Greek civilization can be taken as the base of human development, that paved the way for other civilizations to enrich the field of philosophy, politics, theology and even science and technology.

While the western world boasts so much about their superiority over the rest of the world, they could reign over others only after they copied the ways of life from rest of the civilizations.

Just going back to the 14th or 15th century the South Asian subcontinent on the heart of Indus valley civilization, I guess, was no less better than the western world at that time. While Europe and America has very little to show about their ancient heritage, Nepal's Kathmandu valley still has so much to offer, that has been preserved from its early civilization.

It's sad to see the late Roman civilization triggered so much prosperity in the west, while Greek, Egyptian, Indian, Chinese civilizations slowed their pace and faded away. But the world is transforming and it won't be any wonder if things made the opposite turn around over the matter of few centuries. ;)
